The 6-step roadmap at a glance
The whole journey in one view — each step produces something concrete that moves you toward job-ready:
| Step | What you do | What you produce |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Fundamentals | Learn how search works (crawl, index, rank) & the three pillars | A solid mental model of SEO |
| 2. Practise | Apply it on a real site with free tools | Documented before/after results |
| 3. Specialise | Go deep in technical or AI-era SEO (they pay more) | A standout, in-demand skill |
| 4. Tools | Master Search Console, GA4, Screaming Frog, a suite, AI | A working professional toolkit |
| 5. Certifications | Understand the honest picture (portfolio beats certs) | Right expectations, no wasted spend |
| 6. Apply | Target executive/analyst roles or freelance | A job, client, or freelance start |
Step 1: Learn the fundamentals
Start with how search engines actually work — crawl, index, rank — and the three core pillars (on-page, off-page, technical). Everything else makes sense once you understand this. Don’t skip it to chase “hacks.” Read What is SEO? and types of SEO, then add keyword research and search intent — the highest-leverage early skills.
Step 2: Practise on a real site
SEO is learned by doing. Take a real site — your own blog, a friend’s business, or a volunteer project — and apply what you learn: keyword research, on-page optimisation, basic technical fixes. Then document the results (before/after rankings, traffic, fixes) as case studies. This documented work becomes your portfolio, which matters more to employers than any certificate.
