Step 1: fundamentals & metrics
Start with the concepts and numbers that underpin all paid marketing. Learn the marketing funnel, how paid ads fit, and the key metrics: CTR (click-through rate), CPC (cost per click), CPA (cost per acquisition), conversion rate and ROAS (return on ad spend). Performance marketing is analytical, you make decisions from data, so being comfortable reading metrics matters more than any single tactic. You do not need advanced maths, but you do need to think in terms of cost, results and efficiency.
Step 2: learn Google & Meta ads
Master the two core platforms, and the tracking behind them. Google Ads (Search, Display, Shopping, YouTube, Performance Max) captures intent; Meta ads (Facebook/Instagram) excel at interest-based targeting and creative. Learn campaign setup, targeting, bidding, budgets, and crucially conversion tracking (the Meta pixel and Conversions API, Google conversion tracking), plus performance creative. See our Google Ads course and Meta Ads course.
Step 3: run real campaigns
This is the step that actually makes you a performance marketer: run real campaigns. Performance marketing is a doing skill, so watching tutorials is not enough. Run real, live campaigns (your own, a small business’s, or a project) with real, even modest, ad budgets, then track results and optimise. Ad spend is separate from any course fee and you control it; you can start small. Seeing real money, real data and real optimisation is what builds genuine skill and, importantly, the results you will show employers. There is no substitute for running real campaigns.
