The free core (Search Console, GA4)
Google’s free tools are genuinely powerful — most fundamentals run on them, and many professionals rely on them daily.
- Google Search Console — the single most important free tool: impressions, clicks, your real queries, indexing/coverage and Core Web Vitals. How Google actually sees your site.
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — traffic, behaviour and conversions: what visitors do after they arrive.
- PageSpeed Insights / Lighthouse — speed and Core Web Vitals diagnostics.
- Rich Results Test — validate structured data (schema) for free.
- Looker Studio — build free dashboards from Search Console and GA4 for clear reporting.
Keyword & backlink tools
This is where paid suites earn their keep — scale and depth the free tools don’t match. Ahrefs and Semrush are the common all-rounders for keyword research, keyword difficulty, backlink analysis, rank tracking and competitor/content-gap research. Moz is a long-established alternative, and Ubersuggest is a budget-friendly option for beginners. Google’s Keyword Planner is free (ads-oriented) and Search Console shows your real query data.
Ahrefs vs Semrush? Both are strong; the “better” one depends on your needs (Ahrefs is known for backlinks, Semrush for marketing breadth). Use free trials before committing — and re-check current pricing, which changes.
Technical audit tools
For the technical pillar, the staples are: Screaming Frog (a desktop crawler that scans your site like a bot, surfacing broken links, redirects, missing tags and duplicates), plus Search Console, PageSpeed Insights / Lighthouse and schema validators. Large sites add log-file analysers. These are exactly the tools you’ll use in our technical SEO course.
