What local SEO covers
Local SEO is the specialisation for businesses that serve a specific area. It builds on regular SEO but adds local-specific elements that win the local pack and “near me” visibility. The main areas:
| Area | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Claiming, verifying and fully optimising your free Google listing (categories, hours, photos, posts). |
| The local pack & Maps | Appearing in the map-and-listings block for local-intent searches. |
| NAP consistency | Keeping Name, Address, Phone identical everywhere online. |
| Local citations | Accurate NAP listings on quality directories and local sites. |
| Reviews | Earning and responding to genuine reviews (never faking or buying them). |
| Local landing pages | Useful, unique pages targeting your locations and service areas. |
| Local content & links | Locally relevant content and earned local links (community, news, partners). |
Google Business Profile & the local pack
Your Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly Google My Business) is the single biggest local SEO lever. It’s your free listing that powers your appearance in Google Maps and the local pack — the block of (usually three) business listings shown with a map for local searches. Appearing there drives calls, directions and visits directly.
Optimising GBP means: complete every field accurately, choose the right primary and secondary categories, add quality photos, post updates, keep hours correct, collect and respond to genuine reviews, and keep your NAP identical to your website. An active, complete, accurate profile is what wins the local pack.
