Step 1: learn writing & format fundamentals
Start with the craft, whatever format you choose. Clear writing underpins almost all content, whether you end up writing articles, scripting videos, or creating social posts. Learn to write clearly, structure ideas, understand your audience, and adapt to formats (blog, social, video script, email).
- Clear writing: grammar, structure, clarity and editing are the base of everything.
- Audience thinking: who you are creating for and what they want.
- Formats: how a blog, a reel script, a caption and an email each differ.

Step 2: pick a niche
A niche makes you findable, credible and easier to hire or follow. Trying to create about everything makes it hard to stand out. Pick a niche you genuinely find interesting and can sustain (for example tech, finance, food, fitness, travel, education), then go deep. You can broaden later.
- Pick for sustainability: choose something you can keep creating about for months.
- Depth beats breadth: a focused creator is easier to trust and hire.
- Check demand honestly: is there an audience or client need in the niche?
Step 3: build a portfolio (create consistently)
This is the single most important step: create real work, consistently, and make it visible. Your portfolio is what gets you hired or followed. Publish on a blog, LinkedIn, Medium, YouTube or social, whatever fits your format, and keep a body of your best pieces to show.
- Create regularly: consistency improves your skill and builds a track record.
- Show your best: curate a portfolio of your strongest pieces, not everything.
- Real or spec work: if you lack clients, create sample pieces to demonstrate skill.
- Publish publicly: visible work is what people can find, judge and hire.
