Writing & editing skills
The foundation of almost all content, whatever the format. Even video and visuals start with a script or caption. Clear writing means expressing ideas simply and structuring them well; editing means cutting, tightening and fixing until it reads cleanly.
- Clarity: say things simply; avoid jargon and waffle.
- Structure: organise ideas logically with a clear flow.
- Editing: cut, tighten and proofread; good writing is rewriting.
- Voice: develop a recognisable, consistent tone over time.
Research & fact-checking
Credibility depends on getting things right, and this matters more in the AI era. Good content is accurate. You need to research topics properly and fact-check claims, especially anything AI helped draft, because AI can produce confident, wrong information.
- Research: find reliable sources and understand a topic before writing.
- Fact-checking: verify claims, stats and quotes; never publish unchecked.
- AI caution: always verify AI-generated facts; AI can be confidently wrong.
Video & visual basics
You do not need to be a filmmaker or designer, but basic visual skills are increasingly expected. Short-form video and visuals dominate attention, so knowing how to script, shoot simply, edit, and create basic graphics is valuable, even for mostly-written creators.
- Video basics: scripting, simple shooting (a phone is fine), basic editing.
- Visual basics: simple graphics, thumbnails and layout (for example with Canva).
- Enough, not expert: you need competence, not a design/film degree.
