SEO — Search Engine Optimization
Optimising your content and site to rank highly in traditional search engines like Google and Bing — through keyword and intent research, quality content, on-page optimisation, technical health and off-page authority. The goal is rankings and organic clicks. Most marketers already know this discipline; the others build on it.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
Optimising so your content is selected and surfaced as the direct answer — in featured snippets, voice-assistant replies and AI answer boxes/Overviews. The aim isn’t just to rank, but to BE the answer shown above the links. If SEO is being on the menu, AEO is being the recommended dish.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization
Structuring your content and wider presence so generative AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — cite or mention you when they synthesise an answer. It relies on authority, trust, consistency and being present on the sources AI draws from. The goal is AI citation, not just a ranking.
At a glance
| SEO | Optimise to rank in classic search results (Google, Bing) |
| AEO | Optimise to BE the direct answer (snippets, voice, AI Overviews) |
| GEO | Optimise to be cited by AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) |
| The key truth | They’re complementary layers — not rivals; SEO is the foundation |
| In 2026 | Do all three; AI search is rising but SEO still drives most traffic |
| Honesty check | No one can guarantee AI placement — anyone who promises it is lying |
