There are around nine main types of social media: social networking, photo and video sharing, messaging, discussion forums, microblogging, blogging, content curation, review, and social commerce networks. Each one serves a different reason people go online, from staying in touch with friends to watching video, joining a community, or shopping. More than 5.7 billion people, close to 70 percent of everyone on Earth, now use social media, and the average person is active on more than six platforms at once.
What counts as social media?
Social media is any online platform built for people to create, share and react to content and to connect with each other. That is a wide definition on purpose, because it covers a friend request on Facebook, a video on YouTube, a message on WhatsApp, a question on Reddit, and a product tagged for sale on Instagram. All of them are social media, but they are not the same type. Each type rewards different content and reaches a different audience, so knowing the types is the first real skill in social media marketing. If the term itself is new to you, start with what social media marketing is.
The nine main types of social media
Guides count these slightly differently, and some platforms sit in more than one, but these nine cover the field.
1. Social networking sites. Built to connect with people you know or want to know, through a profile and a list of connections. Examples: Facebook and LinkedIn.
2. Photo and video sharing networks. Built around visual content, and the largest type by attention today. Examples: Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat. Most brands start here, which is why Instagram marketing is usually the first platform skill people learn.
3. Messaging and private social apps. Social but private, for one to one and group chats, and the biggest type by daily use in many countries. Examples: WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram.
4. Discussion forums and community networks. Organised around topics and communities rather than people. Examples: Reddit and Quora.
5. Microblogging platforms. Short, fast, public posts for real time conversation and news. Examples: X, formerly Twitter, and Threads.
6. Blogging and publishing platforms. For longer written content on the open web. Examples: Medium, Tumblr and WordPress.
7. Content curation and bookmarking networks. For saving and discovering ideas rather than posting your life. Example: Pinterest.
8. Review and rating networks. Where people share opinions on places and products, which quietly shape buying. Examples: Google Reviews, Yelp and TripAdvisor.
9. Social commerce networks. The newest type, where discovery and buying happen in one place, whether a shopping-first app or the in-app shops now built into Instagram and TikTok.
A note on overlap: YouTube is a video network but also the world’s second search engine, and WhatsApp is a messaging app that now carries channels and payments. The types are a map, not strict boxes.
The biggest social media platforms in 2026
Here are the largest platforms by monthly active users, with the type each belongs to. Figures come from DataReportal’s Digital 2026 analysis and company reports. One honest caveat: platforms count users differently, and China based apps serve a mostly separate audience, so treat these as best estimates.
Platform | Main type | Owner | Monthly active users, approx |
Social networking | Meta | 3.07 billion
YouTube | Video sharing | 2.85 billion
Messaging | Meta | 2.80 billion
Photo and video sharing | Meta | 2.35 billion
TikTok | Video sharing | ByteDance | around 2 billion |
Messaging and social | Tencent | around 1.4 billion
Discussion and community | around 1 billion
X (Twitter) | Microblogging | X Corp | several hundred million |
Content curation | several hundred million
Professional networking | Microsoft | several hundred million |
Three things stand out. Meta owns the top three platforms on the planet. TikTok holds attention hardest, with the most daily time per user. And Reddit crossed roughly one billion users and is now one of the most cited sources in Google and AI answers. For a brand deciding where to invest, the best social media platforms for business in India narrow this list down further.
Which type of social media should you use?
Picking a platform starts with picking a type, and the type follows your goal.
Your goal | The type that fits | Where to start |
Reach a broad, older audience | Social networking
Build a personal or B2B brand | Professional networking
Grow through short video | Video sharing | TikTok, Reels, Shorts |
Teach or show in long video | Video sharing | YouTube |
Talk to customers privately | Messaging
Build a community around a topic | Discussion and community
Join real time news | Microblogging | X, Threads |
Drive saves and planning intent | Content curation
Sell where people discover | Social commerce | Instagram and TikTok shops |
The common beginner mistake is starting from the platform you personally use rather than from the goal. Choose the type that matches what you want to happen, then the platform inside it, then the content that type rewards.
Types of social media marketing
“Types of social media” and “types of social media marketing” are different questions. The first is about platforms, the second is about how brands use them. The main types of social media marketing are organic content, paid social ads, influencer marketing, community management, and social commerce. The split most beginners ask about is organic vs paid social media marketing.
How social media is changing in 2026
Three shifts are reshaping the map. Video is eating the other types, so photo, networking and even messaging apps have all added video feeds. Communities are back, with forums like Reddit growing fast because Google and AI answers lean on them as trusted human sources. And search and shopping are moving inside social, as younger users search on TikTok and Instagram and buy without leaving the app. The types will keep blending, but the reasons people use social media, to connect, watch, talk, discover and buy, stay stable. This rising demand is also why the career scope of social media marketing and the social media manager salary in India keep climbing.
How to learn to use these platforms well
Knowing the types is the easy part. Making content that works on each, and turning it into reach or sales, is the skill. You can learn the basics by using the platforms and watching what performs, but that is slow and gives no feedback. A structured course fills that gap by letting you run real campaigns and telling you why a post worked or did not. Course Unbox teaches this in its social media marketing course, with a track for beginners, a full course syllabus covering every platform type, and a clear route to the job through the how to become a social media manager guide.
