Salary by role (honest ranges)
Pay rises with seniority, but roles and titles overlap, so treat these as ranges. Approximate India ranges across multiple sources (all):
| Role / level | Approx. India range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Social media executive (0-2 yrs) | ~₹1.8-3.3 LPA | Entry; portfolio-driven |
| Social media manager (3-5 yrs) | ~₹5-10 LPA | Mid-level; strategy + results |
| Senior manager (5-8 yrs) | ~₹12-18 LPA | Senior; leadership/analytics |
| Head / director (8+ yrs) | ~₹15 LPA and above | Varies widely; leadership |
| Freelance | ~₹15k-2L+/month | Highly variable; not guaranteed |
Reality check: entry pay is modest and rises with skill, niche, city and industry. High figures are for experienced, specialised people, not typical of freshers. Nothing here is guaranteed.
Why sources differ so much (read carefully)
This is the most important part of any salary page, and most leave it out. You will see ‘average social media manager salary in India’ quoted as anything from about ₹2.5 LPA to ₹15 LPA. Both can be ‘true’ for their dataset. Here is why they differ so much: (1) Title conflation, ‘manager’ sometimes means an entry executive, sometimes a senior director, so averages mix very different roles. (2) Data source, self-reported sites (Indeed, Glassdoor) often skew lower and reflect broad samples, while employer-survey sources (like some salary databases) skew higher. (3) Sample composition, a dataset heavy on freshers reads low; one heavy on senior metro roles reads high. (4) Employed vs freelance, freelance income is lumpy and often excluded or estimated. (5) City and industry mix, metro/SaaS-heavy samples pull averages up. So a single ‘average’ is misleading; ranges, read with the source in mind, are the honest way to understand pay. Always check who measured what, and when.
