What is social media SEO?
Social media SEO is the practice of using social media to support your SEO, and optimizing your social profiles and content so they're discoverable in search. It has two sides:
- Social supporting web SEO — using social platforms to distribute content, build brand awareness, and earn the visibility that leads to links and searches.
- Optimizing social itself — making your profiles and posts searchable within platforms like YouTube and Instagram, which increasingly work as search engines in their own right.
Together, that overlap is what people mean by "social media and SEO."
Does social media help SEO?
The honest answer: social media is not a direct Google ranking factor — but it helps SEO indirectly, and meaningfully.
| Social signals (likes/shares) | Not a direct ranking factor — Google has said links from social are typically nofollow |
|---|---|
| Content distribution | Social spreads content, which earns real backlinks and mentions |
| Brand & branded search | Social builds awareness, and more branded searches correlate with authority |
| Profiles rank | Your social profiles often rank in Google for your brand name |
| Traffic & engagement | Social drives visitors who may link, subscribe or convert |
So don't expect a like to move a ranking — but a strong social presence feeds the things that do.
Social media optimization (SMO)
Social media optimization (SMO) is the social counterpart to SEO: optimizing your social profiles and content to be found and to spread. That means keyword-rich profile names and bios, searchable captions, consistent branding, and content built to be shared. On platforms that are themselves search engines, SMO is SEO — which is why YouTube SEO and Instagram SEO have become disciplines of their own.
How to use social media for SEO
1. Optimize your social profiles — they rank in Google for your brand; use consistent names, keywords and links.
2. Distribute your content — share blog posts and videos to earn visibility, links and traffic.
3. Build branded search — a strong presence makes people search your brand, a positive signal.
4. Repurpose across platforms — turn one piece into posts, Reels and videos for wider reach.
5. *Optimize within each platform* — apply YouTube SEO and Instagram SEO so your social content gets found in platform search.
6. Earn links naturally — great social content gets picked up and linked by others (off-page SEO).
Platform-specific social SEO
Each platform is its own search engine with its own rules — start with these guides:
- YouTube SEO — rank videos and channels in the world's #2 search engine.
- Instagram SEO — get discovered through Instagram search, Explore and Reels.
- TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest follow the same principle: keywords + engagement = discovery.
Learn it from someone who's done it at scale. This is taught on the CourseUnbox SEO course by mentors including Punit Jindal ("Zorba the Zen"), with 2M+ YouTube subscribers and 4.5L+ Instagram followers. See the course →
