List of Free Directory Submission Websites (2026): 254 Sites Worth Your Time
The best free directory submission websites in 2026 are the ones with real users: Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect first, then human-edited web directories such as Curlie, industry directories such as Product Hunt or Clutch, and national directories such as Justdial and IndiaMART in India. Every site in this list of free directory submission sites offers a free listing. Submit to 20 to 40 relevant ones, not hundreds.
What is directory submission?
Directory submission is the process of adding your website's URL, name, description and category to an online directory so people (and search engines) can find it. A web directory organizes websites by topic or location, a little like the Yellow Pages did for phone numbers.
When people search for directory submission sites or directory submission websites, they usually want one of three things: more visibility for a new site, a local citation for a business, or a backlink. This list covers all three, and it is honest about which ones still deliver.
To submit to directories (or submit a directory listing, as some sites phrase it), you fill in a form on each site, verify your email or phone, and wait for the listing to be approved. Some directories publish instantly; the better ones review every submission by hand.
Does directory submission still work in 2026?
Yes, but only in a narrow way.
Google's spam policies name low-quality directory or bookmark site links as an example of link spam. Mass submission to hundreds of generic directories is exactly the pattern Google's systems are built to discount. At best those links are ignored. At worst they add to a spam signal.
Most reputable directories also mark outbound links as nofollow or ugc. Since September 2019, Google treats nofollow, sponsored and ugc as hints about which links to consider, so a directory link rarely passes meaningful ranking value on its own.
What still works:
Citations on platforms people actually use. A listing on Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp or Justdial puts your business in front of customers searching right now, and consistent name, address and phone details support local rankings.
Niche directories where your buyers browse. A software listing on Product Hunt or an agency profile on Clutch sends visitors who are already shopping.
Human-edited directories. An editor-approved listing on a curated directory such as Curlie is a genuine quality signal, even if it takes weeks to appear.
What no longer works: bulk "submit to 500 directories" packages, instant-approval link farms, and directories that exist only to sell links.
So treat this list as a menu, not a checklist. Pick the sites that match your business, your audience and your country.
How this list was built
Every site in this list meets four tests as of September 2026:
It offers a free listing. Some also sell paid upgrades; those are marked "Free + paid." Directories that charge for every listing are left out.
It is live and accepting submissions. Each site's free listing was checked in September 2026, against the directory's own pages wherever possible.
It has a real audience or a real editor. Either people browse it to find businesses and products, or a human reviews what gets listed.
It is relevant to a clear use case. Every entry has a "best for" note so you can skip what does not fit.
Domain Authority scores are deliberately left out. They are third-party estimates that drift month to month, and Google does not use them.
Which free directory submission sites fit your goal?
Before you open the full list, use this table to jump to the directories that match what you want. Most people need only two or three of these rows.
Your goal | Submit to first |
Win local customers | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, then your national directory |
Launch a software product | Product Hunt, AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, BetaList |
Win agency or service clients | Clutch, GoodFirms, Sortlist |
Reach B2B buyers in India | IndiaMART, TradeIndia, ExportersIndia |
Grow a new blog | Blogarama, Bloglovin', Curlie |
Get a new site indexed faster | A sitemap in Google Search Console, not directories |
That last row matters. If your real goal is getting Google to find a new website, directories are a slow, indirect route. Submitting a sitemap in Search Console is faster and free.
The list of free directory submission websites
This free directory submission list is grouped by type, so you can skip whole sections that do not apply to you. You do not need all of them: most businesses get nearly all the value from 20 to 40 well-chosen sites, and the goal table above tells you where to start.
1. Start here: search and map platforms
These three are the most valuable free listings any business can create. Claim them before anything else.
Directory | Website | Best for | Free tier |
Google Business Profile | Every local or service business; appears in Google Search and Maps | Free
Bing Places for Business | Visibility in Bing Search and Maps | Free
Apple Business Connect | Apple Maps, Siri, Wallet and Messages place cards | Free |
Apple launched Business Connect in January 2023 as a free tool that lets businesses claim and customize their place cards across its apps. If you only have time for one afternoon of submissions, spend it on these three.
2. Free web directory submission sites (general directories)
These free web directory submission sites are the classic directories that still let you submit a site for free. Value varies, so keep this group short and choose quality over quantity.
Directory | Website | Best for | Free tier |
Curlie | Any legitimate website; human-edited by volunteers | Free
Ezilon | General websites, organized by region and topic | Free
ExactSeek | Small general web directory and search engine | Free
AbiLogic | General websites | Free
Viesearch | Human-reviewed general directory | Free
LinkCentre | General websites and blogs | Free
SoMuch | General link directory with an open submit page | Free
Sonic Run | General websites | Free |
About Curlie: Curlie is the successor to DMOZ, the Open Directory Project, which closed on 17 March 2017. Curlie describes itself as a completely free directory with no cost to submit, and its listings are reviewed by volunteer editors. Approval is slow and not guaranteed, which is exactly why a listing there means something.
Famous directories that are not free: Best of the Web, Jasmine Directory, Aviva Directory, DirJournal and Alive Directory all charge for listings. They appear on many "free" lists by mistake, so they are excluded here.
3. Business listing and citation directories (global)
These directory listing sites and free business directories feed your name, address and phone details across the web. Use exactly the same details on every one.

If you are working from an older list
Many free directory submission sites 2025 lists, and older ones, still circulate. A large share of the directories on them have since shut down, changed owners, started charging, or turned into parked domains. Before using any old list, open each site and check three things: the submit page loads, recent listings exist, and the listing is still free. If any check fails, cross it off.
The same applies to this page. Directories change, so revisit your choices every six months.
Directory sites vs other website submission sites
Lists of "free submission sites" often mix directories with other tactics. They are not the same thing, and it helps to know the difference before you spend time on any of them.
Type | What you submit | What you get |
Directory submission sites | Your site's URL, name, description and category | A listing in a categorized directory |
Business listing sites | Name, address, phone and hours | A local citation and customer visibility |
Search engine submission | Your sitemap, through Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools | Faster discovery and indexing |
Social bookmarking sites | A link to a page you want to share | Referral traffic, usually nofollow |
Backlink submission sites | Varies; often a profile or post with a link | Usually a nofollow profile link |
So when you see a list of free web submission sites, free submission websites or website listing sites, check which type each entry actually is. Backlink submission sites and free backlink submission sites in particular are often profile pages on high-authority platforms, and they follow the same rule as directories: relevance first, volume never.
Before you submit: prepare your submission kit
Directory submission goes much faster when every detail is ready in one document. Copy the same text everywhere so your information stays consistent.
Field | What to prepare |
Business or site name | Your exact legal or brand name, with no added keywords |
Website URL | Your preferred version, for example https://www.example.com |
Address | One format, used identically everywhere (for local businesses) |
Phone | One number, same format everywhere |
Short description | About 25 words describing what you do |
Long description | About 150 to 250 words, written for people, not keywords |
Categories | Two or three that genuinely match your business |
Logo and images | A square logo and three to five real photos |
Hours and service area | If you serve customers locally |
Dedicated email | A shared inbox such as listings@yourdomain for confirmations |
Write two or three versions of the long description. Many directories reject or ignore copy that appears word for word on dozens of other sites.
How to submit your site to directories free: step by step
Here is the order that gets the most value from free website directory submission in the least time.
Claim the big three. Set up Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect and complete every field.
Add your national directory. In India that means Justdial plus IndiaMART or Sulekha. In Australia, Yellow Pages and TrueLocal.
Pick five to ten niche directories. Choose only the ones in your industry, from the startup, agency or blog tables above.
Add a few curated general directories. Curlie first, then two or three others from the general list.
Find the right category. Submitting to the wrong category is a common reason for rejection.
Paste from your submission kit. Keep the name, address and phone identical on every site.
Verify immediately. Confirm the email or OTP the same day, or the listing may expire.
Log every submission. Record it in a tracking sheet (see below) so you can check approvals and avoid duplicates.
Spread submissions over two to four weeks rather than doing them all in one day. A steady, natural pace looks like real business activity.
How to tell a good directory from a bad one
Before you submit anywhere, run this six-point check. It takes under a minute per site.
Would a customer ever browse it? If you cannot imagine a real person using it to find a business like yours, skip it.
Is there an editor or review process? Human review is a quality signal. Instant, unmoderated approval usually means spam.
Are the existing listings real? Open three random categories. If they are full of casinos, pills or dead links, leave.
Is the site itself maintained? Look for recent listings, working pages and a clear contact or about page.
Is the category relevant? A good directory in the wrong niche adds nothing.
Does it ask for a reciprocal link or payment? Required link exchanges are a link scheme under Google's policies. Skip them.
Instant approval, high DA and dofollow: what those labels mean
Many lists advertise "instant approval directory submission sites," "high DA directory submission sites" or "dofollow directories." Here is what each label really tells you.
Instant approval means no one reviews the listing. That makes it fast, but it also means no quality control, and directories with no quality control fill up with spam. A directory that reviews submissions is the better sign.
High DA refers to Domain Authority, a third-party score from Moz. It can help you compare sites roughly, but it is not a Google metric, and a high score does not make a directory relevant to you.
Dofollow means the directory does not add nofollow or ugc to its links. Very few reputable directories offer dofollow links, and the ones that advertise them loudly are often the lowest quality. Choose directories for customers and relevance, and treat any dofollow link as a small bonus.
How many directories should you submit to?
For most businesses, 20 to 40 well-chosen listings capture nearly all of the available value: the three search platforms, your national directories, five to ten niche directories, and a handful of curated general ones.
Here is what that looks like in practice. A local bakery might claim Google, Bing and Apple, list on Yelp or Justdial, add Facebook and Foursquare, and join one or two food directories: about ten listings, all of them places hungry customers actually look. A new SaaS tool might skip local directories entirely and focus on Product Hunt, AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, G2, Capterra and Crunchbase. Neither needs a hundred sites.
Beyond that, returns drop quickly and risk rises. Submitting to hundreds of generic directories in a short burst is the pattern Google's link spam systems were built to catch.
Track your submissions and measure the results
A simple tracking sheet saves hours of confusion later. Use these columns:
Column | Why it matters |
Directory name and URL | Know exactly where you submitted |
Date submitted | Spot listings stuck in review |
Login email | Recover access when you need to edit |
Status | Pending, approved, rejected or live |
Live listing URL | Check it still exists later |
Link type | Nofollow, ugc or dofollow |
Referral visits | Judge which directories actually send people |
To measure results, check two places every month. In Google Search Console, the Links report shows which external sites link to you, so you can confirm that approved listings have been discovered. In Google Analytics, filter referral traffic by source to see which directories send real visitors. After three months, drop the directories that send nothing and double down on the ones that do.
Common directory submission mistakes
Using different details on different sites. "Street" on one site and "St." on another, or two phone numbers, weakens citation consistency.
Stuffing keywords into the business name. Directories may reject it, and it looks spammy to customers.
Copying the same description everywhere. Write a few variations instead.
Paying for bulk submission packages. They usually buy listings on exactly the low-quality directories Google discounts.
Forgetting to verify. Unconfirmed submissions often never go live.
Never checking back. Directories close, change owners or remove listings. Review your tracking sheet every few months.
