What is website indexing (the Google index)?
Website indexing is the process of Google storing your pages in its database — the "Google index" — so they can appear in search results. Google works in three stages: it crawls (discovers) a page, indexes (stores and understands) it, then ranks it for searches. Indexing is the middle step — and a page that isn't indexed simply doesn't exist for Google. So before you worry about rankings, make sure your pages are actually in the index.
In short: crawled ≠ indexed ≠ ranked. Indexing is getting into Google; ranking is doing well within it.
How to check if your site is indexed
Three quick ways to check indexing (a "google index checker"):
1. site: search — type site:yourdomain.com into Google to see roughly how many pages are indexed.
2. URL Inspection tool — in Google Search Console, inspect any URL to see if it's indexed and why/why not.
3. Pages (Indexing) report — Search Console lists all indexed vs excluded pages, with reasons — the most reliable check, and better than any bulk index-checker tool.
How to get your website indexed by Google
The reliable steps to index a website on Google:
1. Make pages crawlable — no noindex tag, and not blocked in robots.txt.
2. Submit an XML sitemap — add /sitemap.xml in Google Search Console so Google can find every page.
3. Request indexing — use the URL Inspection tool → "Request indexing" for each important page.
4. Add internal links — link to new pages from pages Google already indexes; orphan pages get missed.
5. Earn a few external links — links from other sites speed up discovery.
6. Keep a clean site structure — shallow, logical, well-linked (technical SEO).
How to index a single page (or new pages) faster
To get a single page indexed by Google quickly: open Search Console, paste the URL into URL Inspection, and click Request indexing. This nudges Google to crawl it soon (though it's a request, not a guarantee). Make sure the page is linked internally and included in your sitemap — that's how you get new pages indexed on Google consistently, not just once.
Why isn't my website being indexed?
Common reasons pages don't get indexed:
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| noindex tag | Remove it from pages you want indexed |
| Blocked in robots.txt | Allow crawling of those URLs |
| Not in the sitemap / no internal links | Add them so Google can discover the page |
| Thin or duplicate content | Google may skip low-value or duplicate pages |
| Brand-new site | Indexing takes time; request indexing and be patient |
| Crawl errors | Fix server errors and broken redirects (check Search Console) |
How long does Google indexing take?
Anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. New sites and pages usually take longer; requesting indexing in Search Console and having a sitemap plus internal links speeds it up. If a page still isn't indexed after a couple of weeks, use URL Inspection to see why.
